Veterans’ Challenge Series - Boot Camp (Challenge #1)

In a tribute to these heroes, I present Part 1 of the Veterans’ Challenge Series. The series consists of four parts, and you must advance to take on the next challenge. Consider it your time in the service. Challenges will stretch from Memorial Day to the 76th anniversary of the “Day of Days (June 6th, D-Day).”

Boot Camp (Challenge #1)
Even the Veterans needed some time to get back into baseball shape heading into the season. For your first challenge, you are tasked with scoring four runs against the pitching staff.

In this event, you must throw every pitcher the Veterans have on their team for at least one inning, allowing them to showcase themselves and to get their arms in pitching shape. If you end up breaking four runs, go ahead and complete the current game to make sure everyone is getting their at-bats and pitch count up before the taller orders come into play.

The Veterans will be throwing:
1st-2nd Innings – Sergeant Alexander
3rd Inning – Private Ruffing
4th Inning – Captain Mathewson
5th Inning – Lieutenant Spahn
6th Inning – Sergeant Wilhelm
7th Inning – Captain Feller
8th-9th Innings – Private Ford

As for your roster construction, you must select 9 batters from the 2000, 2001, or Veterans' set (any combination is allowed). Since this is Boot Camp after all, we are taking it easy on you for other requirements. Your team must remain under 4000 points, consist of at least 3 foils (you may carry more than that), and have a minimal fielding score of +7 IF, +4 OF, and +3 C. House rules for everything else (base running, stealing, groundballs, etc.).

To pass basic training and earn the ranking of Lieutenant, you must share:
-The lineup you selected
-How many attempts it took to break four runs
-Number of runs in your game(s)
-Which pitcher gave up the fateful run

  1. Took me four attempts but made it through. I went with the following line up:
    LF - Ichiro 01
    1B - Helton 01
    SS - A-Rod 01 PR
    CF - Edmonds 01
    DH - Martinez 00
    C - Kendall 00
    3B - Cirillo 00 PR
    RF - Walker 01
    2B - Frye 01

My focus on roster construction was to use some good players that I have both used and not used throughout my past roster construction (never used the A-Rod, Edmonds, Cirillo, and Frye before) for some fun.

Game 1 - managed two runs and had 7 own chart outs
Game 2 - put up three runs this time around but had 3 own chart outs and Frye was thrown out going home in the 5th inning after tagging up on a fly ball - got to love those 20 rolls on outfield checks
Game 3 - managed two runs again in this game, leading the way was Ichiro rolling two own chart outs including one with two runners in scoring position - the back to back walks by A-Rod and Edmonds on their own charts didn't help things either
Game 4 - finally was able to turn the tide in this game, putting up five runs - Kendall hit two home runs which helped the cause - A-Rod hit a two-run double in the fifth off Spahn to push the team to five runs
