Classic San Diego Padres

Sorry for the delay between posts, but finals time took up most of our collective energy at the Greatest MLB Showdown Project!

Our next entry in our CLASSIC SET is the Classic Padres! The Padres are loosely based around their 1984 NL Pennant winner, one of the two Padres teams to make a World Series. If we are being honest, the Padres made the set because their cool brown color scheme. They're a pretty weak team, but their cool unis and ability to get some memorable baseball stars into the set makes them worth it!

Batting Order: Familiar ESPN face "Krukie" brings an OB 10 card to the team, but he cannot manage to do much damage off his chart. He's followed by the franchise's greatest legend: Tony Gwynn. The amazing Hall of Famer brings A LOT of doubles to the party and will be a great #2 or #3 hitter in any lineup. He's followed by Dave Winfield, who brings a ton of pop to the order. Other memorable Padres included here are Steve Garvey, Benito Santiago, and Garry Templeton. Overall, it's one of the weaker lineups, but it's got some fun cards to use for nostalgic and strategic purposes!

Rotation: This is the Padres' strength, led by Randy Jones. He's the first of three tier 2 pitchers, although the only one who's more than a Control 3. Gaylord Perry rounds out the rotation as a tier 3, but he doesn't give up extra base hits. Perry will be one of the most fun to add to a Classic Set expansion pack, as he played for several teams (and pitched well!) over his long career.

Bullpen: This bullpen is highlighted by Gossage, who's one of the greatest closers of all time. He's supported by some solid players that... well, frankly most are not well known. I'm pretty sure McCullers' son is a current Astros starter though! Eric Snow is so obscure that the only Padres picture of him I could find was another card. It's probably the worst card of the set, but the look has kind of grown on me!
