Small Tournament

Hey everyone, with the success of the monthly challenges, I have a small challenge tournament style for anyone that feels like entering. Using only the 2000s set make a 20 man rostered team for a single elimination tournament. Starting either once I have 8 entries or next Friday depending on the amount of people that would like to join, the tournament will begin.

Here are my rules for the tournament:
Must have 4 starters and rotation will be set by the manager.
Every fielding position must be filled and a DH that can be played by anyone.
Must have 3 relievers and 1 Closer.
Remaining 3 roster spots can be filled by any position player or reliever (not Closer).
Team must remain under 5,000 points and no discount for bench players.
Teams can only attempt 5 steals per game not including single+ and only 2 per inning max.
I will be playing all of the games.

Managers interested in this tournament either comment on this post with the team you have created with its lineup, batting order and rotation. Preferably send me an Email Mrunevit@kent.edu with those things plus if you have any managerial style you want, such as how you want your bullpen handled, or subs, or steal preferences.

Draft Rules:
Once a player is chosen he can be on no other team
If a player has 2 versions of a card such as Shawn Green or Carl Everett, only one version of that card is eligible to play.
Once a team is drafted I will put them at the bottom of this post as players not eligible to be chosen for another team. The spreadsheet linked at the bottom will have players checked off once taken.
Choosing your team early is encouraged to have more players at your disposal.
Creating a team name is also encouraged because who doesn't like creativity or funny names.

Tournament seeding:
The highest point total team will receive the #1 seed and if multiple teams tie for the highest point total, the tie breaker will be highest point player on your roster. After that it will go by who submitted their team first. Odd amount of team names may result in a bye for the higher seeds.

Also remember if it is a 8 team tournament your whole rotation will get used and your 4th starter possibly could start the championship game for your team. I am hoping not to draft my own team, but if we end up with an odd number I may draft a team to even the numbers out

Good Luck to anyone who decides to participate, I am hoping this can provide some fun and trash talking inside the community we have here.Have any other question please ask so clarification for everyone heading into the tournament.

    1. Basic strategy:
Lineup, swing away. Bottom of order Anderson/Benjamin is cheap speed. If they do get on, bunt or steal to 2nd so Baines and Sweeney can have a shot for an RBI single. Bell / Marrero can PR late in game for slow top of order if the SB is needed.

Bullpen - Yan if the game is already decided, Plesac in emergency. Bring in Lowe with runners on base, Zimmerman setup guy, Mo closing.

Pretty basic stuff. I don't have any pinch hitters for the weak bottom of the order so just cross your fingers if they've gotta be clutch.

    2. And I accidentally typed NYM for Clemens which is obviously wrong. NYY.

I unapologetically am taking every super value player available to maximize my talent. Rotation has the only tier 2 in it and then three tier 3s, and then my bullpen is absolutely loaded. I want to go to the 'pen as soon as I need to, and I've got the depth in it to carry this team however far it needs to go (despite having a really stellar rotation, I want all the IP 5 guys going a MAX of 5). Lineup ended up having a lot bigger budget than anticipated and I ended up splurging on McGwire and Greg Vaughn because I had the budget. Love having the +10 up the middle defensively, and Hammonds is such an unfair steal at 400 points. Overall, I think my team should be worth closer to 5700 points at least thanks to Saberhagen (530), Guzman (400), Johnson (200), and Hammonds (550)... so I really like my squad! Plus the +10 catcher arm for cheap and a super cheap OB 9 for 3B... loving the way this team turned out!

    1. If this was a FULL season and not single elimination, I'd like my chances more, but at least this way I can go ALL OUT with the bullpen to try to keep things alive!

    2. Guzman should be 400 points! Mistake cards should be corrected. Sending my team shortly.

  4. I was waiting for someone to go discount shopping on Guzman. The other guys aren’t big differences in price but Guzman’s a 360 point mistake. That give you so much more cap room. With all the money you saved you shoulda taken glen allen hill lol

  6. Love this idea, glad I stumbled across the Reddit post. Here's my submission with some certain inherent risks but ah well, here goes:

    Call to the Hall

    Rotation (2210 Pts.):
    Pedro Martinez - 660
    Randy Johnson - 630
    Mike Mussina - 470
    Tom Glavine - 450

    Bullpen (510 Pts.):
    Closer: Trevor Hoffman - 200
    RPs: Jason Grimsley - 150
    Dennis Cook - 90
    Jay Powell - 70

    Starting Lineup (2140 Pts.)
    CF: F.P. Santangelo - 350
    RF: Tony Gwynn - 290
    2B: Roberto Alomar - 560
    DH: Wade Boggs - 220
    1B: Doug Mientkiewicz - 90
    SS: Hanley Frias - 290
    LF: Orlando Palmeiro - 150
    3B: Gary Gaetti - 100
    C: Chad Kreuter - 90

    Bench (140 Pts.)
    M. Martinez - 90
    C. Guzman - 20
    S. Berry - 30

Well, starting with the obvious, went with the first truly SP-heavy team in this tournament. Biggest risk there being that it's single elimination and I'm spending a ton of points on one or two SPs that probably won't even be used, but the idea is to ride their arms deep into games seeing as how they are all IP 7 or 8. The bullpen is nothing special but if the SPs can deliver 8 solid innings and turn the ball over to Trevor Hoffman with a 2-0 or 3-2 lead I like my chances. Grimsley is there to hopefully keep a tie game or close lead close, Powell is there to mop up if the game is already decided, and Cook is a high-risk, high-reward (Control 3, 1-17 out, but gives up a HR) type guy to burn through in extra innings or something like that and hope he extends a game long enough for the team to somehow pull out the victory.

With that amount of points delegated to pitching, the offense is definitely on a shoestring budget. I wanted to get one superstar card in there which probably isn't wise given how those points could have been more evenly spread out but overall am happy with an offense that costs 2140, an average of 238 pts per card, and has an average On Base of 8.2. The star I went with was Roberto Alomar because he can do it all.. high on base, Speed A, decent fielding, 6 extra base hit results if you count the 15-16 Single+, etc. Others like Santangelo, Frias, and O. Palmeiro are great discounts for their On Base but don't provide much else after that. The idea here is to hopefully create some baserunners for Alomar and some of the OB 9s and knock an extra base hit or two to drive in 2-4 runs in a game, which should have a good chance of holding up assuming the pitchers do their job.

All in all, the offense is weak, and if say Randy Johnson has a bad game and gets lit up due to his low control, I'm a goner, but I do love that Johnson and Mussina's charts and have always done just fine with them.

Finally, the team theme. There are some odd choices of players here - particularly Boggs, Gwynn, and Glavine. I wanted a fun name/theme and decided to try and get as many Hall of Famers on the roster as possible. Unfortunately the true discount HOF players in the 2000 set were mostly taken (Larkin, Biggio, and Baines specifically), but I still managed to squeeze in 8 of the 20 players on the roster. Having a roster that is 40% in the Hall of Fame works for me but I'm confident I could've done 50% if some of those other guys were available!

    1. i lvoe it, and i love the risk of the big rotation, bold strategy but like you said it can really pay off with some good rolling.

      Delete
    2. Maybe I missed it in the intro but will the SP be rolled at random each game? How do you do that? Or just round 1 is SP1, next round is SP2, etc.?

      Delete
    3. Wait I see it now, I'm still not 100% clear but it sounds like it will go SP1 for round 1, then 2, 3, and 4 for the championship if it gets there. Yeah?

      Delete
    4. yeah you set your rotation, do u ever want your bench used or will they just be getting water and chewing gum for the starters

      Delete
    5. Martinez can pinch run for any of the Speed C or B outfielders, DH, 1B, or SS. Then either he, Guzman, or Berry can replace them in the lineup. Likely just in a close+late game situation but if he can get on and swipe a bag do it!

I know there is a SB limit but given how limited the offensive opportunities are likely to be I will say to attempt a steal of second with every Speed A player that reaches base from the start of the game until that limit is hit. I doubt I'll hit it with only two Speed A's in the starting lineup so Martinez should still be in play come the 8th/9th innings.

    7. Need another team? I've got a second and very different philosophy that likely would blow up spectacularly but could be a lot of fun (big bullpen of IP 2's to run bullpen games, cheapest starters, all OB 10 hitters), would love to try and build a lineup of it let me know if you want one more!

      Delete
    8. Go for it the more the merrier

      Delete
  7. Welp if you need a few more to get to 8 teams, here's my stab at a new strategy:

    Rotation (230 Pts.):
    C. Ho Park -200
    B. Bohanon - 10
    D. Kile - 10
    C. Ogea - 10

    Bullpen (1550 Pts.):
    RPs: K. Foulke - 350
    R. Mendoza - 270
    J. Wasdin - 240
    R. White - 230
    B. Rigby - 220
    A. Rhodes - 180
    CP: D. Veres - 60

    Starting Lineup (3220 Pts.)
    CF: K. Lofton - 440
    SS: D. Jeter - 490
    1B: F. Thomas - 340
    LF: G. Sheffield - 460
    DH: J. Thome - 430
    C: B. Mayne - 350
    3B: D. Hansen - 290
    RF: A. Ochoa - 340
    2B: J. Vizcaino - 80

Not much lost in translation here. Team is punting Starting Pitching in favor of a slew of 2-IP RPs out of the pen, if the SP can get through 1 maybe 2 innings (unsure what your policies are on how early you can remove a starter but assuming you can lift them whenever there is literally no point in the game too early to take one out for these guys haha) turn it over to 6 fairly solid options to piece together the remainder of the game.

Offense is loaded with eight OB 10s, some have some pretty unexciting charts but as long as they get on base and keep the line moving this team hopes to win a game 8-7 or 10-6 or by some score like that. Or maybe a more likely scenario is to get blown up by a balanced team with a high control starter, but I'll run an offense with an average on base of 9.6 out against anyone to see what happens!

    1. haha i love the strategy plan, well se how it plays out. I dont need 8 teams for it, if it stays at 6 i think ill do double elimination, but basically once i wake up tomorrow moring im going to start the tournament so if more teams get entered by like 10 am eastern time they be in, but if not its going to be 6 team double elimination. Also my next one after this is going to probably be the 2001 set tournament.
