Showdown Challenge #2: Foils of War

The first Showdown Challenge, "Gloat For Pedro", was a huge success! Participants mostly scored faster than I expected, but Reddit user patsen29 helpfully broke down the numbers and showed why Pedro struggled to make it through 3 innings, let alone 9. Baez showed up in a lot of lineups and was pretty successful, I'd say he's probably the MVP of the challenge. There were lots of folks who scored in the 1 to 3 inning range, and to me that qualifies as winning this challenge.

The big takeaway is that OB 7's can be smart pickups. And yes, I did participate, although I was very embarrassed with my lineup because I went 7 full innings without scoring.

Anyway, March has finally arrived, and to fill the gap between now and Opening Day, here's another challenge. This one, entitled "Foils of War" will challenge your drafting creativity. Will you draft like the Padres or the Mariners? How well will you fare against yet another hall-of-fame caliber pitcher? There's only one way to find out...

The Challenge

C.C. Sabathia recently announced his retirement at the end of 2019, and what a career he's had. As a tribute to him, for this challenge you will be facing C.C.'s 2001 PR card, which is one to behold.  Control 3, on at 15. At 10 points, it's also among the cheapest foils in the game. Have a look:

In this challenge, the "Foils of War", you will be tasked with building a lineup to battle 5 innings with C.C. Sabathia. Your duty as a seasoned Showdown veteran is to prepare the rookie Sabathia for the Majors by shelling him. The most runs scored in 5 innings wins this challenge. The problem is, you can't get all of your squad to take a break from the day to day grind, so you're going to need to be creative.  To reflect this difficulty, there are limitations to your lineup. They're still non-negotiable. Can't take this to arbitration. Don't bother calling Tony Clark. The rules are as follows:
  1. You must select 9 cards from the 2000-01 vintage, or any customs from this blog. Feel free to further limit yourself (certain team, blue cards, 2001 only, et cetera).
  2. Your lineup must fill every position, plus any DH as long as said DH complies with the rules of the challenge.
  3. Your lineup must include two foils or "alternate" design cards.
  4. Your lineup is limited to 1250 points.
  5. You may use expert gameplay rules. Your lineup's defense is C.C.'s defense.
  6. Sabathia does not tire by giving up runs. He lasts 5 innings. At the end of five innings, he's off to the nearest Chipotle to rethink his life choices and drown his sorrows in guacamole.
  7. Track your stats. Whoever scores the most runs on CC after 5 innings wins.
  8. To be eligible for bragging rights, you must post your lineup, how many times you scored and how said scoring went down. Posting poor C.C.'s stats is encouraged.
  9. Expect to get feedback and push back on your lineup. Take it like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. takes staying in AAA.
As an aside, take at look at the similarity between his 01 PR card and his 2018 card. It's remarkable to me how alike they are, though the outs are a pretty big difference. So, as a "part 2" to this challenge, take 5 more innings against 2018 Sabathia and compare your results.

  2. EDIT: Deleted first post bc I realized I'd made some errors. This is the real challenge here:

I tried this and am still trying to figure out the best approach. After seeing how well Javy Baez did for me in the Pedro challenge, I decided to look for guys who had terrible defense and low OB, but great charts.

I stuck with the 01 set.

    CF Corey Patterson OB5 (Foil)
    2B Alfonso Soriano OB6
    C Tyler Houston OB6
    LF Juan Gone OB7
    1B Daryl Ward OB6
    3B Pedro Feliz OB5
    RF Reuben Rivera OB6
    DH Vinny Castilla OB5
    SS D'Angelo Jimenez OB7 (Foil)

First of all, Jimenez is my least favorite foil in the game. I remember years ago when I pulled this as my first foil of the new set. I saw the shiny cover. My heart soared... then I looked at his chart.

    There were tears.

But, I needed a terrible shortstop to keep my points low, and he certainly fit the bill.

The idea here is simple. Let CC's terrible chart get him into trouble, and hope that someone connects for a long ball.

I played two games, and they couldn't have been more different.

First came, CC went the distance and allowed 1 run and struck out 12. He let 13 runners get on base and stranded all of them except for one lone RBI single from Soriano. And it's not that I never had an advantage when I needed it... Juan Gone rolled a 1 on his own chart THREE TIMES. I was livid.

Second game, CC got shelled. Tyler Houston raked, going 4-5 with a double, homer, two singles and an extra walk just for fun. Patterson had 3 hits and a SB, and Juan Gone, Daryl Ward, and Reuben Rivera all homered to saddle CC with an 11-run walloping.

So this is an all-or-nothing sort of lineup. But it's fun having so many dangerous charts in play and now I actually wonder how the 2018 O's would fare against CC...

  3. Game 3. My lineup finally did what I wanted it to. This was what I was aiming for.

    INNING 1
Patterson leads off the first with a single and a stolen base. After a FB out by Soriano, Houston swats a 2-run dinger for a 2-0 lead. After a pair of walks and a popup, Reuben Rivera tacks on one more with an RBI single, before Castilla flies out to end the inning.

    CC: 1.0 IP, 3 runs, 3 hits, 2 walks, 2 left on.

    INNING 2
Jimenez walks to lead things off so I guess I don't hate him so much for this inning. Patterson walks. Soriano flies out again. A single by Houston loads the bases for Juan Gone. DOUBLE! We're sending Houston... safe! A three run double for Gonzalez!
6-0. CC unravels. He loses control to Ward, who homers with a 14 on his chart. 8-0. Next batter Feliz, and another homer. 9-0. Rivera FB out, Castilla single, Jimenez FB ends the inning.

CC: 2.0 IP, 9 runs, 8 hits, 4 walks total.

    INNING 3
Patterson singles and he's on again. CC gets Soriano with a FB (again!!!) and then Houston. Then Juan Gone rolls a 17 on his chard annnnnd it's gone, 11-0 now. Ward strikes out, which is CC's first K, to end it.

CC: 3.0 IP, 11 runs, 10 hits, 4 walks. Ouch.

    INNING 4
Pedro Feliz walks to lead it off. CC loses Rivera too. Castilla singles but Feliz holds at 3rd with no outs. Bases are loaded for Jimenez, who will almost certainly disappoint all of us. CC rolls a 3. Advantage D'Angelo who... triples. Bases loaded 3-bagger! 14-0!
    Ok Jimenez. You can stay.
CC finally gets Patterson on a K, but Soriano redeems himself with a single and Jimenez jogs in from third. 15-0. Houston and Juan Gone fly out, and CC finishes out the fourth.

CC: 4.0 IP, 15 runs, 13 hits, 6 walks. But it's not a total loss; CC has 2 K's now.

    INNING 5
CC is looking pretty sad now. But he also sees the finish line. He gets Ward on a GB, which is the first time he's retired the leadoff hitter. Feliz doubles, but CC buckles down and gets Castilla and Rivera to pop up. Scoreless inning. CC pumps his fist and heads for the clubhouse.

CC final line for the contest: 5.0 IP, 15 runs allowed, 14 hits, 6 walks.

    1. Love it! Really interesting how different the games turn out.

  4. All 2000 set.
    1 - Carlos Beltran (foil 1)- CF
    2 - Dean Palmer (foil 2) - 3B
    3 - Jim Leyritz (PR) - 1B
    4 - Mickey Morandini (PR) - 2B
    5 - Willie McGee - LF
    6 - Joe Girardi (PR) - C
    7 - Manny Martinez - RF
    8 - Mike Caruso - SS
    9 - Christian Guzman - DH

I aimed for low defense and decent to high speed. Figure I'd let CC do all the work with putting guys on and to just take advantage on the base paths. I splurged half my budget on the foils looking to get some easy runs on any lucky rolls. An added wrinkle is any Single+ is automatically challenged by the catcher.

    1st inning
Beltran justifies his high price tag right away with a quick homer. Palmer and Leyritz reach. At this point I get greedy and want both runners to score. I have Morandini bunt, putting both runners in scoring position and ultimately giving CC a crooked number for the 1st inning.
    3 runs, 3 hits, 1 left on.

    2nd inning
Guzman and Beltran reach, but Palmer strikes out and Leyritz chokes. What a waste.
    0 runs, 1 hit, 2 left on.

    3rd inning
CC gets a 1-2-3 inning. He's getting cocky, and I'm beginning to regret Willie McGee.
    0 runs, 0 hits, 0 left on.

    4th inning
Both Caruso and Guzman reach on CCs chart. Beltran singles and I get aggressive with Caruso for a quick run. Palmer once again fails me though and it's up to Leyritz with 2 out to try for some redemption. Despite being a card based on a different year, Jumbo Jimmy channels his 1996 self and comes up with a clutch 3 run homer.
    4 runs, 3 hits, 0 left on.

    5th inning
Despite a Girardi double, the bottom of my order does little in the way of offense. With 2 outs and Guzman up, I really wish I could pinch hit. Inning ends with Beltran waiting on deck.
    0 runs, 1 hit, 2 left on.

    Beltran: 2-2, HR, BB, 2 R, 2 RBI
    Palmer: 1-3, R, 2B, K
    Leyritz: 1-2, HR, BB, 2 R, 3 RBI
    Morandini: 0-2, Sac bunt
    McGee: 0-3, RBI
    Girardi: 2-3, 2B, RBI
    M. Martinez: 0-3
    Caruso: 1-2, BB, R
    Guzman: 1-2, BB, R

    Sabathia: 5IP, 7 R, 8 H, 4 BB, 1 K

Out of the bullpen comes the most recent version of CC, and it just so happens that the lineup is set to have Beltran lead off...

    6th inning
2 quick outs from the new CC and it looks like the offense is in trouble what with the minimum for reaching base against this CC going from 15 to 18, but Leyritz stays hot and goes deep again. Morandini adds his 1st hit of the game (off CCs chart) but Willie McGee continues to disappoint.
    1 run, 2 hits, 1 left on.

    7th inning
the 5 on base portion of the lineup steps in and we buckle up for a quick inning. The new CC makes his presence felt as Martinez flies out on what would have been a walk on the old CCs chart.
    0 runs, 0 hits, 0 left on.

    8th inning
Guzman gets the improbable advantage and leads off with a single, but once again, the new CC takes over, getting flyouts on what the old CC would have walked with. Jim Leyritz bid for a 3 homer game falls short with a weak groundout.
    0 runs, 1 hit, 1 left on.

    9th inning
Willie McGee finally does something as he rolls a single+, but continues to infuriate as he is thrown out trying to steal on a +5 catcher.
    0 runs, 1 hit, 0 left on.

    10th inning
    Extra innings!
Manny Martinez becomes just the 2nd strikeout victim of the night. Caruso gets a single+ and actually pulls off the steal, setting up a runner in scoring position with less than 2 outs. After Guzman pops out, Beltran singles and Caruso scores thanks to the 2 out speed boost. Palmer finally comes through with a double off CCs chart and Beltran easy scores without a throw from the weak defense. MVP Jim Leyritz grounds out to end things.
    2 runs, 3 hits, 1 left on.

    Beltran: 1-3, R, RBI
    Palmer: 1-3, 2B, RBI
    Leyritz: 1-3, HR, R, RBI
    Morandini: 1-2, 2B
    McGee: 1-2, CS
    Girardi: 0-2
    M. Martinez: 0-2
    Caruso: 1-2, SB, R
    Guzman: 1-2

    Sabathia: 5IP, 3 R, 7 H, 0 BB, 1 K
