2001 Set Small Tournament

After the success of the last tournament, I am announcing the 2001 set tournament. Same rules will apply in this tournament. It will begin next Friday and will probably take a few days depending on the amount of teams that enter. So all you managers out there get your calculators and build the next dominant team to qualify for the next showdown cup. Using only the 2001 set make a 20 player team.

Here are my rules for the tournament:
Must have 4 starters and rotation will be set by points.
Every fielding position must be filled and a DH that can be played by anyone.
Must have 3 relievers and 1 Closer.
Remaining 3 roster spots can be filled by any position player or reliever (not Closer).
Team must remain under 5,000 points and no discount for bench players.
Teams can only attempt 5 steals per game not including single+ and only 2 per inning max.
I will be playing all of the games.

Managers interested in this tournament either comment on this post with the team you have created with its lineup, batting order and rotation. Preferably send me an Email Mrunevit@kent.edu with those things plus if you have any managerial style you want, such as how you want your bullpen handled, or subs, or steal preferences.

Draft Rules:
Once a player is chosen he can be on no other team
If a player has 2 versions of a card such as Alex Rodriguez, only one version of that card is eligible to play.
Once a team is drafted I will put them at the bottom of this post as players not eligible to be chosen for another team. The spreadsheet linked at the bottom will have players checked off once taken.
Choosing your team early is encouraged to have more players at your disposal.
Creating a team name is also encouraged because who doesn't like creativity or funny names.

Tournament seeding:
The highest point total team will receive the #1 seed and if multiple teams tie for the highest point total, the tie breaker will be highest point player on your roster. After that it will go by who submitted their team first. Odd amount of team names may result in a bye for the higher seeds.

Good Luck to anyone who decides to participate, I am hoping this can provide some fun and trash talking inside the community we have here.Have any other question please ask so clarification for everyone heading into the tournament.

Strategy: Never use my bench or bullpen. Starters are going 8 and Benitez closes the 9th. If I'm losing by more than 3, the relievers can come in. But if it's close, all starters are going 8. Hoping pitching carries me and I can hit a few homers each for enough runs.

Manager will be Tom Thibodeau - former basketball coach of the Minnesota T'wolves and Chicago Bulls. If anyone knows how to manage without playing bench players, it's him. If you don't get that reference, Thibs was famous for playing his starters an absurd amount of minutes and playing his bench players as little as possible. Narrator Voice: This did not go well in the NBA.

    Go team!!!!!

    1. Strategy: This team is defensive minded. It's slower than I would have liked because I lost Higginson (I was typing in my lineup after working on it for a couple hours, refreshed before posting and Higginson was gone, kinda frustrating but whatever). Let Maddux pitch and save the bullpen for the guys with less IP. Don't be afraid to sub in speed in the later innings and play some small ball, as games should be close with this lineup around. Outfield +7, Infield + 13, Catcher + 11. Don't be afraid to rely on the bullpen for game 4, as it's stronger than my 4th starter and Maddux won't need a ton of 'pen support (off day to refresh pen). Good luck Purple Cobra Chickens!

    1. Strategy

      Lineup
Rickey gets the green light as much as possible, especially against a bad catcher arm / against a GB pitcher, but use your judgement

Everyone else is just trying to hit

      Rotation
      Cross your fingers

      Bullpen
Rick White is the MVP of this team. The low control starters will probably get into trouble at some point in middle innings where they get into a jam. Rick White’s job is to kill the rally and then carry the team to the late innings. If it looks like trouble, pull the starter.. the purpose is to avoid the big inning.

Brantley is here bc we need a closer but he is not the closer
      Rhodes is the closer
      Nellie setup

everyone else is there to be cheap and to soak up innings if game is out of hand

For the bullpen use Rob Nenn and Bob Wells as much as possible. Leskanic will be the 3rd option and only use Creek when you have no other choice. Do not use the bench. They are fill ins. Excited to see how this team shapes up. I always focus on bullpen, having only 1 closer available on the team is a bummer. Wish I could have paired Rivera or Gordon with Nenn.

    1. Please use the speed liberally. Move the runners on single+ send them home from 1st every chance you get. Any catcher less than 10 run on them religiously. Especially if the pitcher is an ace.

Decent pitching with a follow-up setup man and good closer. Couple RBIs out of the heart of my line-up Giles/Salmon/Giambi and I should walk away a victor! You'll use my pitching staff thru 7, bring in Beck to setup and Wagner to close. Bench shouldn't be used as they are scrubs.

    1. Thanks for the catch. Now that we’re over 8 teams entered in probably going to break it down into random group pools so seeding won’t matter unless we get 16 entries

    2. Pools would be cool... though I kinda hope we get more teams. lmk if you want more ideas, i got at least one. (This is my favorite set so I'm hoping the remaining stars will show up somewhere, with Nomar, Jeter, Sosa, Chipper, Mo etc still sitting on the sidelines.)

    4. i wont say no to another team, so idk if you followed my showdown cup last summer, but my plan with the culmination of all of this was having the
2000 tournament a few weeks ago
      2001 tournament
Classic Tournament (all the teams/players weve created on the blog)
      2018 Tournament
for sure those 4, all the winners gain automatic bids into the showdown cup, all the other teams made will then play in qualifiers to make it, its a 16 team tournament.
Then possibly a 5th tournament with all the players not selected from all 4 of those categories like a suepr mash up

    7. The possibilties with a tournament of all the classic cards are endless. The teams that are created would be so much fun to see.

  18. Please let me know if I have listed anybody already taken:

    The Pesky Pole Dancers
    Rotation – 1820
    SP1 – Kile – 460
    SP2 – Leiter – 460
    SP3 – Mussina – 450
    SP4 – Schilling – 450

    Bullpen – 640
    CL – Lowe – 250
    RP1 – Cormier – 170
    RP2 – Kline – 120
    RP3 – Santos – 100

Starters can all go 7, potentially going deeper depending on the score and part of the line up. Relievers are situational, with Lowe as the closer and Cormier the set-up man. Kline is a specialist again the bottom of the line-up. Santos can be used if the bullpen needs to be called upon early. Lowe can go multiple innings if against the right part of the order.

    Bench – 250/50
    BN1 – Stinnett – 50/10 (C)
    BN2 – Brosius – 100/20 (3B)
    BN3 – Lewis – 100/20 (OF)
Lewis can pinch run for Krueter late in the game with Stinnett as the sub. Brosius is only used at the end of the game to increase infield total.

    Starting Line-Up – 2490
    DH – Frye - 190
    LF – Burkman – 400
    RF – Hammonds – 380
    3B – Cirillo – 300
    CF – Becker – 280
    1B – Grace – 210
    C – Krueter – 240
    2B – Vina – 240
    SS – Vizquel – 250
Consistency with all 9 OB. Not a lot of power but a lot of guys who get on base with nobody getting out on a 5 roll. Outfield is average defense of 4, and infield is a little low with an 8. On extra base opportunities, I always go for the extra base with B speed guys, especially with two outs or going home. Be overly aggressive and make the defense make plays. Not much left on the board so you got to dance with the ones left.

Also, I realized after doing all of this that BN guys had to cost full instead of 1/5 (comparing it to other teams now), so this team is actually invalid (I believe).

      Rotation – 1590
      SP1 – Kile – 460
      SP2 – Leiter – 460
      SP3 – Guzman – 360
      SP4 – Tapani – 310

      Bullpen – 910
      CL – Rivera – 300
      RP1 – Cormier – 170
      RP2 – Speier - 140
      RP3 – Santos – 100
      RP4 – Trombley - 100

      Bench – 110
      BN1 – Stinnett – 50 - C
      BN2 – Wilson – 60 - C

      Starting Line-Up – 2490
      DH – Frye - 190
      LF – Burkman – 400
      RF – Hammonds – 380
      3B – Cirillo – 300
      CF – Becker – 280
      1B – Grace – 210
      C – Krueter – 240
      2B – Vina – 240
      SS – Vizquel – 250

Starters can still all go 7, potentially going deeper depending on the score and part of the line-up. Relievers are situational, with Rivera as the closer now and Cormier still setting up. Speier is the specialist for certain parts of the line-up. Santos can be used if the bullpen needs to be called upon early, around the 5 and 6 and can throw 2 if necessary and against the right part of the line ups. I want a vintage Rivera, multi innings if in tough situations. Trombley is there like Tapani, eat innings and rest the bullpen for the ones that matter.

I believe this one works now. Made a couple of bench changes, bullpen changes, and swapped two starters. Batting order remains in tact.

I am excited to see how this turns out and excited to participate in the community more frequently. I ran a league a couple of years ago, no salary cap, but full 12 team draft with all 2000 and 2001 cards eligible. Multiple player cards were eligible, so had three Ken Griffey Jr.'s, three Alex Rodriguez's, etc. We had a ton of fun with it.

      Delete
    4. Yep that one comes in right at 5000 points, Im glad youre participating i nthe community we have really grown over the past year and its been alot of fun. I dont know if you saw the showdown cup I ran last year with actualy teams but it was a blast and the community voted on who they thought would win. I wanted to involve them more and figured this year I would have them create the teams trying to qualify for it, keep everyone interested and even have some rooting interests and friendly trash talk. Glad you joined this ill be alot of fun to play out

    5. Realized that my RP4 should read Tromley, not Trombley. Sorry for the mistype, just want to make sure you pull the right card Friday night!

  19. Alright this was not easy as I jumped on board too late but after taking home the crown in the 2000 tournament I had to go with a similar philosophy, that team Call to the Hall had 8 Hall of Famers, so I present Call to the Hall 2 with an upgrade to 9 Hall of Famers:

    Rotation (1310 Pts):
    T. Glavine - 480
    J. Smoltz - 440
    P. Rapp - 240
    M. Yoshii - 150

    Bullpen (730 Pts):
    Closer J. Wetteland - 40
    R. Garces - 220
    G. Swindell - 210
    T. Crabtree - 170
    C. Silva - 50
    C. Almanzar - 40

    Lineup (2770 Pts):
    SS B. Larkin - 320
    2B R. Alomar - 410
    DH M. Sweeney - 380
    C M. Piazza - 450
    3B C. Jones - 400
    1B J. Thome - 310
    RF T. Gwynn - 260
    LF D. Martinez - 110
    CF C. Murray - 130

Bench - Cal RIpken Jr., 190

Squeezed another HOFer on here to get to 9/20 after the success of the last team, I like the offense here but they are stretched for pitching. Try to stick to the 3 non-terrible Relievers. Other than that, we'll see if they can defend their crown!

    2. Funny thing is I was a much bigger player of the 2003-2005 sets. Started the game late but liked the stat distributions better on those cards so have tons of fun 03/04/05 teams on hand but never seriously played 00 and 01 so this has been fun to get to know these sets a little better! I don't like my chances here like you said, tough tough competition, but who knows. Here's to Alomar repeating as tournament MVP!

    3. yeah i was always 00-01, i have very few of the after years. There are still some good players wating out there. If you take the best available at each position your teams still over 5000 points

    2. Here's one possible suggestion, if no one else submits a team. But this would get a few more star players into the tourney.

      TOTAL: 4980

      ROTATION: 1260

    3. As for the Danger Noodles, that is the team, but not the batting order. As the GM, I name Runne130 as the Manager and grant him the full authority to set the lineup and use subs as he sees fit. However, I recommend:

      Furcal
      Kendall
      Palmer
      Stevens
      Davis
      Nixon
      Cruz
      Molina
      Reese

I further recommend using Shumpert to pinch run for the outfield spots or first base. If you do so, feel free to sub Brogna in to play defense at first.

    4. If you don't like Stevens hitting cleanup, feel free to move him down. 8 would probably work.

  22. 2019 Baltimore Orioles

    Starters
    Moehler - 340
    Harper - 300
    Milton - 250
    Lima - 30

    Relievers/Closers
    Lowe - 250
    Petkovsek - 180
    Sullivan - 160
    Grimsely - 120
    Santiago - 290

    Bench
    LaRue - 80
    Vizcaino - 80

    Line Up
    Jeter - 410
    Burks - 520
    Colbrunn - 270
    Dye - 370
    Lawton - 300 (DH)
    Vidro - 420
    Hocking - 260 (CF)
    Leiberthal - 270
    Brosius - 100

Not a great team, but high control from the starters. Bullpen has a ton of options with high control built around Lowe. If Lima can get you into the 5th, Santiago and Grimsely can get you into set up range for Sullivan and Petkovsek. I included Jeter at SS (despite his poor fielding), and one of my favorite cards of all time, Burks. Hocking is a steal card for a 9 OB at 260 and Vidro is another fun card to play with, but has to bat so low since he's a 4 out vs. the other guys at 3. Colbrunn is another card that gets lost in the shuffle a lot, and Lieberthal is another quiet, underrated card (won some games with him catching back in the day).
