Inaugural Showdown Cup Tournament In Review

Well that sure made for a fun end to my summer playing out the first Showdown Cup and crowning the first Champion the 2016 Chicago Cubs whom just dominated the tournament. To me the biggest disappointment in the tournament was the 1995 Atlanta Braves, I felt the pitching staff set them up to be competitive but other than Fred McGriff the offense was not able to get anyone across the plate. I have a feeling if I replayed the tournament with the exact teams all over again there would be a different playoff out look and who knows maybe a different match up presents a different problem for the Cubs. All I know is that I am ready for the second one to come along, but I will get more into that later, first I have some awards to give out.

Picking the Winners: When I sent out the poll prior to the tournament starting two people selected the Cubs to win it all, Myself and Raeyrd69@yahoo.com

There you have it folks, the awards and leaders from the first Showdown Cup, which brings me to my next point. For qualifications what would you rather see take place in the next tournament.

16 teams like this last one where a full team is used

16 all time teams with: No point limit

16 all time teams with: 10,000 point limit

16 all time teams with: 7,500 point limit

16 all time teams with: 5,000 point limit

16 teams from the 2018 set that is being created

Let me know your thoughts on the tournament and what you think the second showdown cup should bring. I hope you all enjoyed it.

  1. ahh so cool. really glad you did this. for the next tournament, I think the set up is fine as is. if you add point limits, it might be more fun to set up a team how you normally would in Showdown. Maybe take the bottom 4 teams and switch them out with other teams you’ve created/could create. Hm..maybe a Pirates team from the 70s 😎

  2. yeah theres just alot of way i can go with this tournament. I think of the teams created on this site theres still 7 teams that werent in the last cup, plus i have the 91 pirates in the works actually just have to find quality enough pictures. thats where alot of struggles are with older teams is finding good pics of all the guys.even early 2000 is tough to come by. my thought with the point limits is it takes a little strategy as well, then i can incorporate older cards plus any other of teams and maybe some people on the site would like to build the teams and i would just play them out, lots of strategy in a point limit, like do you spend it on some big names or spread throughout to have a balanced team. it will be a little bit before the next tournament but im ready to get going again for sure

    1. being from Pittsburgh and only the age of 29, I’d like to see the Pirates win SOMETHING before I die :( lol! I enjoyed the teams used. I like using/seeing complete teams compete. it would also be cool to see a 5k point limit though too and see what players are chosen and the like. either way I’ll be looking forward to it! I’m starting one myself with the 2000 Showdown set and the commons from the 2001 set.

It’s great to have this blog exist so many years after the game ended.

  3. This is so awesome, congrats on a fantastic First Cup! I would love for it to be 16 teams like this again, but with one or two from 2018 (*cough Brewers cough*)... but honestly an unlimited, super-power Cup would be so entertaining! Truly the best of the best of the best going head to head!! (Rangers would somehow win because their hitting in the original set plus the 2010-11 team would be unstoppable)

    1. You could even have like... a best of seven series. find the best AL players and the best NL players and get it going. It would be crazy xD Hall of Famers/All Stars across the board. I’d if getting a few teams of that would be as good though. I feel a lot of players would have to pop up a few different times.

  4. I would love to see all time teams with no point limit/10,000 point limit. It would be fun to see how all the super teams perform against each other. The cup was such a great idea, would check in every day to see how it was progressing. Looking forward to the next cup/tournament.
