Veterans’ Challenge Series - Training Camp (Challenge #2)

Training Camp (Challenge #2)
In a tribute to these heroes, I present Part 2 of the Veterans’ Challenge Series. The series consists of four parts, and ideally you advance to take on the next challenge. Consider it your time in the service. Challenges will stretch from Memorial Day to the 76th anniversary of the “Day of Days (June 6th, D-Day).”

Now that you made it through boot camp and have earned your first ranking, it’s time to get your feet wet out on the training ground. This challenge consists of an opportunity to face the Veterans with your pitchers of choice.

Their batting line up is as follows:
Lieutenant Robinson (2nd)
Captain Cobb (LF)
Captain Williams (DH)
Corporal Wilson (3rd)
Sergeant DiMaggio (CF)
Lieutenant Mays (RF)
Captain Greenberg (1st)
Private Banks (SS)
Seaman Berra (C)

To win you must keep the boys in uniform to three runs or under. Your set defense will be +9 IF, +5 OF, and +6 C. Manage the Veterans the same way you would manage your own squad.

Here are the boundaries to your roster construction:

-You must select 3 pitchers (1 starter and 2 relievers) from either the 2000, 2001, or Veterans set (any combination is allowed)

-You have a salary of 800 points at your disposal (sorry, no Pedro and Wagner combo)

In order to advance and be promoted to Commander, you must share:
-The pitchers you selected
-How many attempts it took you to hold the Veteran bats below the threshold
-What inning they broke through the line (if they did)
-Any fun facts from your game(s)

  1. So this took me two roster constructions to win. My focus again was to have some fun and utilize some different cards to play with. With that being said, here are the teams:
    Team 1:
    Chuck Finley 00 PR (460)
    Derek Lowe 00 (180)
    Doug Brocail 00 (160)

I have never used Finley a ton so wanted to try him out (giving some Cleveland fans some love) and I know the infatuation some on here have with Brocail (and I love this card in the 00 set). Lowe is one of my all-time favorites from this set (and one of my all-time favorite Sox).

This go around did not go well. The Veterans dominated Finley on both attempts, scoring 5 runs (3-run shot) in three innings on the first attempt and then scoring 4 runs in two innings on the second go around.

    Team 2:
Bret Saberhagen 00 PR (430) - using the original pricing not adjusted for fun
    Mike Trombley 00 PR (130)
    John Wasdin 00 PR (240)

Saberhagen was always fun to use because of how cheap he was, Trombley I think is a great value for what he does, and Wasdin is wicked cheap for being a 5 control 16 out guy (and with the HR on his chart he is not used a ton by most people).

Was able to advance on the first attempt with this squad. Saberhagen went 6 strong innings giving up 2 runs. Got out of a bases loaded, 1 out jam in the 4th which was huge (aided by an own chart out too). Trombley threw the 7th and allowed one hit. Wasdin came in and was perfect in the 8th and 9th innings.
