All-Star Series (Best of 9)
The Western Conference will be home for games 1-3, 8 and 9. The Eastern Conference will be home for games 4-7.
Game 1 (West at home): East, 7-3
Pedro Martinez started against Jeff D'Amico, the two unanimously voted in starters. Pedro won the duel, striking out 10 and allowing 3 runs through 7. D'Amico pitched horribly, going 5 and 2/3, allowing 6, as Nomar Garciaparra, Gary Sheffield, and Manny Ramirez each knocked in 2 runs. Barry Bonds added a solo homer and scored 3 runs.
Game 2 (West at home): East, 3-1
John Smoltz pitched well for the East, allowing just 1 run in 6 innings. Matt Morris allowed 3 runs in 5 innings for the West to take the loss. Edgardo Alfonzo knocked in 2 runs for the East, and Vlad Guerrero knocked in the other with a 3 hit game.
Game 3 (West at home): West, 8-3
Chan Ho Park righted the ship for the West in game 3, allowing 3 runs over 7 innings. Sterling Hitchcock took the loss for the East, allow 4 runs in 5 innings. Chipper Jones had 4 hits including a homer as he scored twice and knocked in a pair. Andruw Jones added a solo shot, and five other hitters each knocked in a run.
Game 4 (East at home): West, 12-4
Jarrod Washburn got knocked around for 7 runs in 4 innings, taking the loss for the East. Bret Saberhagen didn't pitch well for the West, allowing 5 in 4 innings, but was good enough to win and tie the series for the West. Bobby Abreu went 3-5 for the West, with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored. Charles Johnson knocked in 3 as well.
Game 5 (East at Home): East, 4-2
Kevin Brown gave East back the series lead, allowing just 2 runs in 7 innings and striking out 10. Andy Ashby allowed 4 runs in 6 innings for the West. Manny Ramirez went 1-4 for the East, but his 2 run double gave East the go-ahead run.
Game 6 (East at Home): West, 5-4
Pedro Martinez went against D'Amico again, allowing just 2 in 7 innings. D'Amico allowed 4 in 6 and 2/3, but Rick Aguilera blew the 4-2 lead for the East by allowing runs in the 8th. Todd Helton led the way for the winning team, with 2 homers, 3 RBI, and 2 runs. All four runs for the East were scored on solo shots, by Jorge Posada, Edgardo Alfonzo, and two by Manny Ramirez.
Game 7 (East at Home): East, 3-2
East took the lead in the series again, as John Smoltz had his second excellent start of the series, once again allowing only 1 run in 6 innings. Like Smoltz, Matt Morris had a similar stat line to game 2, allowing 3 runs in 5 innings. Cal Ripken Jr.'s RBI single put the East ahead 3-0, and Smoltz and the pen held on to win.
Game 8 (West at Home): East, 6-5
The East won game 8, behind a great start by Sterling Hitchock, who went 6 innings and allowed just 1 run. Chan Ho Park got beaten up for 6 runs in 5 innings. Once again, all of East's runs were on homers, as Cal Ripken Jr. hit a 3 run homer, Vladimir Guerrero a 2 run bomb, and Gary Sheffield a solo shot.
East wins the series, 5 games to 3.
Cal Ripken Jr., Edgardo Alfonzo, Vladimir Guerrero, and Manny Ramirez all were major contributors for East's hitters. That resulted in a lot of vote splitting, leading to John Smoltz receiving the All-Star Series MVP, going 2-0 with just 2 runs allowed in his 12 innings.
That was a really fun read. Pretty cool.
