6 On-Base/2 Control Challenge

Time to show some love for the poor man Showdown cards. You know, the ones you were always mad about in your booster and draft packs (still no idea what John Valentin 00 brings to the table). Everyone typically builds their teams around high ob/control guys, maybe throwing in one low guy here or there to save some money on points. For this challenge, you must construct your entire roster with lower end guys. A true chance for them to sine!

As we've been floating around the idea of total on-base and control points, this is the format that your roster construction must follow for this challenge. The rules are as follows:

-You may select players from 00 (base and PR), 01 (base and PR), 19 (base), and 20 (base) sets (those are the sets that I have).

-A specific player may only be used one time on your roster. You may not carry multiple version of the player. So no 01 or 20 Pujols, but you have to respect the fact he's got cards on both ends.

-You must use players from at least two different sets.

-You must select at least one foil on your team from the 00 or 01 sets (there are 19 different options to choose from).

-For your hitters, you have a total of 53 on-base points to use.

-As a bonus to add a big bat to the lineup, you may select one 7 ob player. This player must be swapped out for a 6 ob, so your roster construction will consist of 1 7 ob, 6 6 ob, and 2 5 ob.

-DH is required for this challenge.

-You must have 9 hitters/batters.

-You may not use any 4 ob hitters. Sorry to ElĂ and Alex.

-You may only have pitchers of 2 control on lower.

-For your rotation, you must fill a 4-man rotation using 5 total control points.

-You may carry only 2 starters that are capable of throwing 7 innings or more.

-For your bullpen, you must carry 5 relief pitchers using only 5 total control points as well. These pitchers must be relievers.

When you are done with your roster, please share your team name and players: on here in the comments section, send it to me directly on discord or ping me in the discord channel under challenges.

The format for this challenge will be:

-Every team will play 12-15 regular season games, depending on the number of entries and teams.

-From there, every team will be seeded in the playoffs.

-Every round will be a best of 7 series. Depending on how your team does will impact your rotations ability to reset and rest properly (if you sweep a series v having to play 7).

-House rules will apply throughout the entire challenge.

Rosters will be accepted through November 22.

Good luck and have some fun using these guys you used to frown upon when opening the packs back in middle school.

  1. Remind me what house rules are regarding stolen bases? In other words, is there value to have a strong defensive catcher here or not really?

    1. My house rules: up to 7 sb attempts per game. So there is value in getting a decent arm to prevent B’s from running all over

  2. My submission before I forget. Could've packed more punch with a different OB 7 but Raul Mondesi was the foil in the first pack of Showdown cards I ever opened. My brother and I both got one PR pack for Christmas in our stockings in like 2000 or 2001. We loved baseball cards but had never seen these. Mondesi was cool because unlike the rest he was shiny. We had no idea there was a game associated until later. So paying homage to our first foil and some extra homage by adding his son as well, here goes:

    C - Roberto Perez 2020
    1B - Richie Sexson 2000
    2B - Adam Kennedy 2001
    3B - Matt Chapman 2020
    SS - Adalberto Mondesi 2020
LF - Raul Mondesi 2000 PR
    RF - Ruben Rivera 2000
    DH - Shohei Ohtani 2000

    SP - Max Scherzer 2020
    SP - Jeff Suppan 2001
    SP - Kerry Wood 2001
    SP - Scott Elarton 2001

    RP - Mike Morgan 2001
    RP - Jose Silva 2001
    RP - Carlos Almanzar 2001
    RP - John Wetteland 2001
    RP - C.J. Nitkowski 2001

Didn't venture out of 01 for the bullpen but SPs Control = 5, RPs Control = 5, Batters OB = 53. Good mix of speed and power in the lineup. Excited to see if the Mondesis can win me some games, let me know if I missed anything!

  5. "For your bullpen, you must carry 5 relief pitchers using only 5 total control points as well. These pitchers must be relievers."
Does this mean they can't be closers?

    1. I would assume they can be closers too, there's really no difference when playing no strategy cards except for the "closer bonus" in point cost, but there's no cap here

  6. Only asking because "reliever" is a specific pitcher type, and I figured if they meant "they cannot be starters" they would phrase it like that.
