30 for 30 League -- PART ONE (30 game standings and stats)

In case you missed it, our most ambitious league yet had its draft and a full 30 team league of 25 man rosters made of players from the past 30 years is ready to roll.... and it has begun rolling!! The teams are going to each play a full 162 game schedules and it's being fully simulated by the great Savard the Goat, who's used the simulator he's created for some truly special simulations on this blog before!

The season is being simulated in five parts, and each time I'll be providing updates on the standings and stats here:

  • 30   game mark
  • 62   game mark
  • 92   game mark
  • 122 game mark
  • 162 game mark
So here we are after 30 games and there are a couple players making a huge impact for their teams:

BIG MAC is leading the way for hitters at a .351/.492 with 14 HR

Now let's get to the standings:

NARRATIVES: Right off the bat, the fast starts by the teams at the top of their divisions in the National League jump off the page, particularly the 24-6 Miami Marlins! Overall, the NL East stands out with a great overall winning percentage, beating up on the AL East in the first section of the season. Even with three other teams .500 or better, the Marlins have opened up the largest lead in the MLB after only 30 games. It'll be interesting to see how sustainable that success is moving forward, particularly with some really respected squads (Philly, Washington in particular) waiting in the wings. Milwaukee and Arizona winning 20+ games through 30 shows strong starts throughout the NL, with both teams riding strong rotations early. The dangerous (and my picks for division winner) Cubs and Dodgers lurk in striking distance in both divisions at 17 wins.

It was a surprise that the Marlins went with 1997 Sheffield rather than the superstar 1996 version, but this leadoff man is hitting .343/.474/.435 through 30 games -- definitely better than 360 pts of value!

In the American League, everyone is more tightly bunched. The A's are in the #1 seed with 18 wins, but that's behind the incredibly hot start of Mark McGwire. I do not think it's sustainable, as he's slugging an insane 0.845 through 30 games (14 dingers). No one has a division lead greater than 3 games. The biggest surprise in a bad way has to be Detroit, the most popular pick for World Series champs, starting off with the worst record in baseball... you'd think that has to change, but they've dug themselves a hole right off the bat!

Big issue in Detroit: this OB 11 card has a .187/.275/.220 slashline

Individual performances of note:
  • Vlad Guerrero hit for the cycle, going 5-5 with a single, double, two triples and a homer! He scored 4 runs and drove in 2
  • There were three other five hits games --
    • Hanley Ramirez 5/5 with 4 doubles, 2 RBI and 2 R
    • Juan Soto 5/6 with a double, an RBI and 2 R
    • Joe Randa 5/5 with a double and a run
  • Pedro Martinez has two complete game shut outs in the first 30 games
  • Chris Carpenter and Charles Nagy also have two complete game shut outs
  • Greg Maddux has a single complete game shut out
  • Carlos Pena (4 RBI) and Chris Hoiles (6 RBI) both have a 3 HR game
Besides the cycle, Vlad is hitting .366/.422/.602 with 12 HR and 21 RBI.
Truly, Vlad's making his team glad!

Now let's look at who the league's statistical leaders are through 30 games. It's very early, but there's some fun guys so far!

MVP Jeff Kent is in almost all of these top 10 lists,
and his high AVG/OBP is leading to plenty of RBIs

SB

running wild in the first 30 games

Pitching
ERA (min 30 IP)

(5)    Chris Sale                CWS                1.62

Mike Hampton's 1999 card is out-performing expectations,
but really supporting my longstanding argument that the original set did him dirty as a Tier 4

WHIP (min 30 IP)
(1)    Shane Bieber            CLE                 0.84
(2)    Chris Carpenter        STL                  0.87

One of the Tier 1 aces leading the way for the Guardians, Bieber is keeping opponents off the bases

(1)    Mike Hampton         HOU                   5

(1)    Mike Soroka             ATL                    5

Wins may be an outdated stat, but Walker is still grabbing a bunch of them up early in the season!

(1)    Brad Ziegler                ARI                  14

(5)    Sergio Romo               SF                      9

If the Brewers are going to hold onto the NL Central, they're going to need Hader
to continue being near the top of the save charts

IP
(1)    Charles Nagy            CLE                    50
(2)    Greg Maddux            CHC                   48

(7)    Mike Hampton            HOU                44.67
(8)    Cliff Lee                      TEX                 44.33
(9)    Randy Johnson            ARI                    44
(9)  Corey Kluber               CLE                     44

The Cubs are going to have to keep riding Maddux's arm if they're going to catch Milwaukee

K
(1)    Corey Kluber                CLE            67

(10)  Corbin Burnes                MIL           52

Randy Johnson -- first round pick, first rate strikeout machine
