By special request coming at you today is highest point valued third basemen in Showdown. Combining our custom cards with the 2000 and 2001 original sets. The list of third basemen is headline by the top 3 all being MVP winners from that season. The biggest one in the list, if you listened to the most recent podcast on the Los Angeles Dodgers talking about Max Muncy and his low at bats, is Fernando Tatis from the original 2000 set. In his career other than the 1999 season the most home runs he had in a season was 18, he hit 34 in 1999. His 2000 season was a decent season but after that he fell off completely. It goes to show that some guys like Chipper Jones and Miguel Cabrera can make these dominant cards yearly, while one good year for a player can make him look like a Hall of Famer. Lets examine the top 5 third basemen and let me hear your thoughts on your favorite to use third basemen in your showdown games.
5 Fernando Tatis '00 570pts
First up is Fernando Tatis, and diving more into what I was talking about in the intro, in this season it was his highest on-base percent by nearly .040 points, In his 11 year career he stole 50 bases, in this season alone he stole 21, only 29 in the other 10 years. Home runs with 34, the next highest being 18 and highest batting average by .022. The only thing he did consistently in his career was hit doubles. Now lets actually look at the card, only category he was at the top of was the speed with his A, while being at the bottom of 6 categories. While being a strong option for third base, personally he isn't worth the points compared to what we will be seeing from these other guys.
4 Nolan Arenado '17 580pts
Nolan Arenado comes in at 4th place, and brings the highest defense of any third basemen the showdown set has ever seen. When you take the +4 defense and mix it with his chart of an 11-20 being a double or better he provides so much and makes you forget that hes only a 9 on-base. He led the most categories with 4 in the group. He really feels like he can do anything these other guys can do, and his point range might make him the value pick of the group.
3 Chipper Jones '00 610pts
The original showdown cover boy, and 1999 NL MVP Chipper Jones come in at 3rd, and brings his high speed and high walk chart to the set. Leading those two categories with middle of the road on-base and defense makes him the true middle of this class. Not a lot of weaknesses when you reach this point level, and Chipper really shows that in this great card.
2 Josh Donaldson '15 620pts
2015 AL MVP Josh Donaldson comes in with a card that is similar to Chipper Jones but a slight improvement in almost every category. This card doesn't lead a single category, but is only the bottom of out through, and triples. If I choose him for my team neither of those will bug me because you have the high OB, the defense at +3 and he brings some power to the lineup with his 17+ home run.
1 Miguel Cabrera '13 650pts
2013 AL MVP Miguel Cabrera tops the list of third basemen with his 11 OB card. Interestingly enough with this card he seems to be very hit or miss. He was at the top of 3 of the 9 categories, and the categories that he wasn't at the top, he was at the bottom. I would call him the most boom or bust 11 OB although there isn't anything wrong with this card, for his points he doesn't provide much defense and no speed. He might not be worth the 650 points but if he is drafted and placed in a line up he will provide the offense that makes him worth his high price point.
Of the positions looked at so far, I think this one might be the most up for debate at who the best truly is. I personally would take Josh Donaldson first and then Nolan Arenado for my team because of the defense plus offense. What is your strategy when building a team at the third base position? Who would you take from these 5?
