Happy Jackie Robinson Day

It's April 15, so that can only mean one thing across Major League Baseball, and that is that it is Jackie Robinson Day. We honor the man that broke the color barrier of the game making his MLB debut on this date in 1947. Jackie Robinson Day has been a Major League Holiday since 2004 and requesting that every player on the field wear the number 42, which has been retired across the league since 1997, on Jackie Robinson Day in 2009. If you would like to see more about how Major League Baseball is celebrating the day follow this link. Now for the reason we are all on this site, the Showdown cards, and I took a few stabs at a card to celebrate this day.

The first one, I found the 42 retired number logo and slapped it on to signify the celebration of Jackie Robinson Day. The statistics are from his 1949 season, the only year that he won a MVP award. In this season he had a career high in hits, stolen bases and batting average.

Now this is the exact same card. but I found it important to mess with the colors on the card to straight black and white, breaking the color barriers one might say. On the baseball field and in life people shouldn't be judged for their color, just by the numbers on their chart. The things we can learn from this man and all he did for the Civil Rights movement to make us as a people all better off.

So besides enjoying some good baseball on Jackie Robinson Day, if you are looking for something else to do, read some articles on this great man, or pop in the 42 movie, get some popcorn and enjoy. To end this post, lets look back at the first Jackie Robinson card I made, which was from "A Walk Through The Hall of Fame" June 27th last year when I was still learning how to make these great cards, and nothing was centered and you can see how lost I really was.

Here is a link to Top 20 Facts about Jackie Robinson and reading them to see a few glimpses into how terrible he was treated at the beginning of his career.
