MLB SHOWDOWN 2019 SET -- San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres spent the money this past off season to land Manny Machado for 300 million dollars. He didn't return that value as expected this season but some young guys that they have paired with him can make for a fun run in the future. The 2019 Padres finished last in their division with a 70-92 record and this team is pretty rough. They tied the Indians in my twitter poll for which team to release today, and figured you guys could wait on some Indians content. Pay attention to my twitter page @mlbshowdowncup for more polls as I want to do a vote each day for who gets released next of the teams that I created. I had high hopes for the Padres this season but the Tatis injury hurts, and another season of developing the young talent leaves me hopeful for what we may see in 2020.

Lineup: This lineup i am not sure what exactly what to do with it. Garcia leading off seemed like the obvious choice to hopefully get someone on base for the impressive rookie Fernando Tatis Jr. Might be one of my favorite cards in the set for his price you are getting an impressive player for the middle of your line up. While Manny Machado is a downgrade from last season he is draft able to fit in your expensive early draft picks to get an 8 ob that can defend two positions and home run at 17. After that it is a crap shoot, with Hosmer and Myers you get some decent players to fill in and his home runs hopefully if they get the advantage. Hunter Renfroe brings a lot of power to his chart, but his 6 ob leaves a lot to be desired. Austin Hedges is so bad he got a 5 ob in the year where barely any cards have 5 on bases. Rounding out the order is Manuel Margot and if you couldn't tell I really like having a speed A in the secondary lead off position.

Rotation: This rotation is perplexing in the sense of it is so much better than last years rotation, and the Ace is a stud 6 control who lets runners on at 14. Lucchesi and Lauer are also both nice up and coming starters who I think will keep improving as the seasons go by. Finally Cal Quantrill is a 3 control out through 14 but gives up no doubles. The card is a great 4th option for a bullpen on cheap points that you will need good bullpen support behind him.

Bullpen: Kirby Yates! Kirby Yates! Kirby Yates! that is all you need to know and I can stop typing right here. But lets discuss the 6 control out through 16 that has no doubles on his chart. Other than Tatis he is the best card on this team. Compared to last season this bullpen is absolute trash from there on. Craig Stammen has 2 doubles on his chart, and Perdomo is a serviceable 3 control third option for the end of most batting orders. After that you get 2 innings of worrying about a home run with Matt Strahm and Robbie Erlin who you probably don't want to run out to the mound in a close game.

The San Diego Padres have 18 players averaging at 233 points per player. I am excited to see what this team can be next season, but in this iteration they have some nice parts that you can take to make your team great. As I said earlier stay tuned to @mlbshowdowncup for more polls to decide who I am releasing next.

  1. Yeah...this team leaves a lot to be desired. Tatis is a stud at 5.86 expected runs which will undoubtedly put him as one of the top SS cards this year. Machado is next best at 4.21, and then it's a pile of trash.

Pitching wise Paddack is OK at 6.83 expected runs, but for a top end guy you are struuuuuggling. Yates is the real stud here at 4.85 expected runs, a true top of the bullpen arm but then it's ugly. Lot to be desired here, but 2020 should be better.
