Showdown Challenge #1: Gloat For Pedro

Introduction

Welcome to the first Showdown challenge, a new monthly series of challenges meant to keep the game interesting and fun. We’ve all done 5000 point matches or leagues, and while by-the-book Showdown is still as alluring as ever, we often miss out on the subtleties of the game by sticking to tried-and-true parameters. These scenarios will encourage the end user, that’s you, to think outside the box, to use the analytical skills that’s made you so good at crafting the perfect lineup of 9’s and 10’s. The segment is meant to be interactive in nature and, if successful, will enable playground-style shenanigans. So please, fight like Bryce Harper and Jonathan Papelbon. Jab at your opponents like Trevor Bauer jabs at college girls on Twitter. Okay, maybe not that bad. But seriously, we’re a bunch of baseball fans, we should be able to engage in friendly banter with like-minded internet strangers.

Anyway, an introduction would be incomplete without inspiring a sense of direction. Suffice it to say that where this goes is up to you. It may turn into audio segments between regular contributors. It may evolve into a competition with prizes that (barely, I’m poor) exceed bragging rights. It may crash and burn like Rafael Palmeiro’s latest “comeback” attempt, or MLB Showdown itself. Too soon? Yeah, too soon.

The Challenge

Pedro Martinez may like to throw punches at old men (RIP Don Zimmer), but he also threw some incredible baseball games during his prime. The 2001 Pedro Martinez is widely regarded as the best 00-01 style Starter WotC made, and for good reason. Just look at this card.

7 innings, control 5, on at 18, no extra base hits. That’s absurd. It’s no wonder Pedro now has a successful career saying controversial things about baseball players. He had the stuff to back it up.

And so, this first challenge, “Gloat for Pedro”, involves you building your best lineup to face off against him. By best, I mean the lineup constructed to score against him, because the longer it takes to score on him, the longer he gloats. The “winner” of the challenge is thus the lineup that scores earliest against him. But there are rules. Non-negotiable rules, even with the MLB Showdown Player’s Association. They are as follows:
  1. You must select 9 cards from the 2000-01 vintage, or any customs from this blog. As an extra challenge, try limiting yourself to just one year's worth of players.
  2. Your lineup must fill every position, plus any DH as long as said DH complies with the rules of the challenge.
  3. You may only use cards with an On-Base of 7 or less.
  4. You may use expert gameplay rules. Pedro’s catcher has a +5 arm, his infield is +7, and his outfield is +4.
  5. Pedro pitches until you score. He gets tired as normal.
  6. When you score, you win. If Pedro gets through 9 innings without you scoring, he wins.
  7. To be eligible for bragging rights, you must post your lineup, when you scored, and how said scoring went down. Posting Pedro’s stats is encouraged.
  8. Expect to get feedback and push back on your lineup. Take it like Joey Votto takes pitches outside the zone.
Ninja Edit: For extra challenge, try using your lineup's defense as Pedro's defense. You didn't see anything... *waves arms*

Got it? Good. Now get to it!

    1. So glad to hear it. Thought of it on a whim, liked the title, rolled with it.

If I were to make some adjustments, I'd suggest that you have to use the stats of your own team to back Pedro. That would make card selection even more challenging, as some of your cards have crazy stupid awesome fielding.

  5. Well, 2.2 innings is the mark to beat, guys.

    Lineup (all 2001):
    OF Mike Darr, 160 pts
DH Bubba Trammell (NYM), 170 pts
    1B Lee Stevens, 180 pts
OF Jose Cruz Jr, 270 pts
    3B Joe Crede, 140 pts
    CF Torii Hunter, 160 pts
    SS Mark Loretta, 150 pts
    C AJ Pierzynski, 130 pts
    2B Pokey Reese, 210 pts

In the first and second, one single was hit in each inning (Stevens in the 1st off of his chart with 2 outs already and Crede led the inning off in the 2nd off of Pedro's chart. Torii bunted him over to 2nd but Loretta and Pierzynski both popped up the end the threat.

The first two hitters in the 3rd both K'd but then the planets aligned. Pedro rolls a 1 to give Trammell the advantage and he draws a walk. Pedro rolls ANOTHER 1 which allows Stevens to pick up his second single of the day and put Bubba into scoring position. Pedro wins the advantage this time, but a 20 is rolled for another single. Bubba rounds 3rd and heads for home, 15 speed + 5 2-out bonus + 5 heading for home bonus and the +4 OF is not gonna be able to catch him!

    Pedro's final line: 2.2 IP, 1 R, 3 K, 1 BB

  6. FOREVER BLUE

I wanted to use multiple years, so I gave myself the rule of a lineup of only "blue team" cards... Mets, Cubs, Dodgers, Royals

    2B Baez '18
    RF Bo Jackson '89
    DH Soler '16
    1B Cron '18
    LF Puig '18
    3B Howard Johnson '86 Mets
    CF Kike Hernandez '18
    C Carter '86 Mets
    SS Chris Taylor '18

    Bottom of the 1st
    no score
beautiful day for baseball here as Pedro takes the mound in front of a sellout crowd...
and leading off against Pedro is the young Cubs sensation Javy Baez... the set...

    Pedro Roll: 20

...and Javy’s quickly down two strikes. He shakes it off, digs in again. Here’s the 0-2 from Pedro…

    Baez Roll: 20

and he connects! Slow roller down the third base line and… it stays fair! Baez is already standing on first! He practically threw the bat at that one. Now the speed of Baez has the leadoff man aboard.

The question is do you send him? Bo Jackson is up next... tough to double up so Baez might get the steal sign later but it looks like he is holding for now. The pitch to Bo…

    Pedro Roll: 20

Martinez quickly in charge again. His pitches are showing especially good movement today. Baez takes his lead. Bo waits. The 0-2…

    Jackson Roll: 13

And it’s a ground ball! To second for one…

    DP Roll: 20

Relay to first in time! Both runners are erased! Wow! Pedro’s defense picked him up there. And Bo hurls his helmet to the ground in disgust as he and Baez head back to the dugout. So now Soler will come up with the bases empty.

    Pedro Roll: 15

A good battle here but Pedro in charge...

    Soler Roll: 7

Swing and a miss for strike three! That’s the first K for Pedro and he gets through inning number one 1-2-3, no runs, one hit, nobody left.

    Bottom of the 2nd

CJ Cron will start things off in the second. Puig on deck, Johnson in the hole…

    Pedro Roll: 1

Pedro in a tough spot as he has fallen behind 3-0 to a dangerous hitter in Cron. But you don’t want to walk him either…

    Cron Roll: 12

And that’s into the gap! It'll go to the wall! Cron will steam into second with a leadoff double!!! The crowd is right back in it as Blue has a man in scoring position with nobody out for Puig!

    Pedro Roll: 1

Holy smokes, that crowd is awake now as Pedro falls behind 3-0 again. He needs to find his command quickly. The wind and the pitch to Puig…

    Puig Roll: 7

And he lost him. Better than giving up a hit, though. So two on, no outs for Howard Johnson.
Do you call a bunt? Or not?
I wouldn’t give Pedro a free out in this situation when he suddenly can't find the zone. Make him throw you a strike...

    Pedro Roll: 11

Pedro coming back here. Johnson fouls away a few pitches, but he’s down 1-2…

    Johnson Roll: 14

Another ground ball scooper up by the shortstop! Could be two! Can they do it again?

    DP Roll: 20

Perfect defense! Pedro smiles and points to his shortstop as he gets the ball back. Cron at third, but with two outs now and that quieted the crowd pretty quick. Centerfielder Kike Hernandez at the plate, and the first pitch from Pedro is

    Pedro Roll: 1

    Kike Roll: 12

swung on and it's a ROPE into right field! Kike takes it the other way! Cron jogs in from third to score and Blue breaks through early!

    Blue scores after 1.2 innings

    PEDRO LINE: 1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 1K, 1 ER

Some extreme rolls with this one, got lucky early. Gonna try a few but it's fun...

    1. Love the play by play! Baez is popping up consistently in my player evaluation articles despite them heavily favoring higher OB and I think this (as well as below) clearly shows why.

  7. Ran this a few times and this is when the breakthroughs happened:

Game #2 - 2.0 IP Baez solo HR leading off 3rd inning
Game #3 - 0.0 IP Baez very first AB solo HR
    Game #4 - 0.2 IP Cron 2B scores Baez
Game #5 - 3.0 IP Bo Jackson solo HR in 4th
    Game #6 - 5.2 IP Baez 3-Run HR in 6th

My conclusion is that I'm using Baez from now on in all my decks

    1. Haha Baez is amazing, glad he's playing so well! I think a lot of managers will be scared by the low on-base, but he's so lethal that it's worth it!!

      This is really cool!

  8. Pennant run Russell branyan got the advantage and hit a lead off home run in the 5th inning for the indians, it was also my first hit of the game as well

  9. Given Pedro's history going up against the Yanks, I made a NYY (all OB7 or less) team as well...

    2B Cano '09
    SS Didi '18
    3B Andujar '18
    DH Strawberry '98
    C Posada '98
1B Tino Martinez (Original MLB Showdown 2000)
    LF Ricky Ledee (MLB 2000)
    CF Gardiner '18
    RF Walker '18

Pedro had a shutout until the 9th when Cano hit a solo shot. I let him finish it out and his final line was vintage Pedro: 9.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 11 K's

  10. Ok work is super slow today so I got around to this. I used my anaylsis to come up with the best possible line up and got:
    J Baez 2018 Cubs 2B/SS/3B
    A Soriano 2002 Yankees 2B
    Johnny Bench 1970 CINCY C
    R Howard 2008 Phillies 1B
    Gorman Thomas 1980 MIL CF
    Bobby Bonds 1977 CAL L/R
    R Sanders 2001 Diamondbacks L/R
    M Williams 1997 Indians 3B
    Scott Spiezio 2000PR Angels DH

First inning Pedro struck out the side while allowing Soriano a 1B+ (advanced to second). Second inning Pedro got Gorman on a PU, Bobby Bonds on a fly out, gave up a single to Sanders and then nailed the door shut with a ground ball from Williams. Leading off the 3rd however Pedro rolled a fateful 1 and SCOT SPIEZIO HIT IT OUT OF THE PARK!! So Pedro lasted 2 innings before surrendering a bomb.

I played the entire game out and here are the final stats

    J Baez 1 for 5, 1B and 2Ks
    A Soriano 2 for 5, 1B, 1B+ -> 2B, 1K
    Johnny Bench 1 for 5, 1B and 3Ks
    R Howard 2 for 5, 2 1Bs, 1K
    Gorman Thomas 0 for 5, 2Ks
    Bobby Bonds 1 for 3, 1B, BB
    R Sanders 2 for 3, BB, 1B, HR
    M Williams 1 for 4, 1B
    Scott Spiezio 2 for 4, 1B, HR, 2Ks

Pedro had a tough go of it but finished with 9 IP, 5 ER, and 11Ks. He clearly got tired as he had only one strike out in the 7-9 innings!! He gave up the advantage 5 times: 1B+, HR, 1B, HR, FB, 1B. Reggie Sanders clearly came out on top here and actually had the opportunity for an even more monster game had he not squandered his second advantage opportunity with a fly ball.

  11. It seems like this exercise just goes to show that a lineup of OB 7 with the right chart can still do pretty well.

I wonder what the result would be if OB wasn't capped but the lineup's points were.
