Best Third Basemen Comparison

Best Third Basemen Comparison

On to the hot corner! Once again, if you need a refresher on how this works look here..

Third base is a bit closer to 1B than 2B is, with some real power hitters, however they have there is some of the finesse you’ll find at 2B or SS. Some of the greatest in the game played third, let’s see how it translates to their cards!

Unlike the second basemen, this group of players is widely diverse across generations. Feliz from the ’01 PR set leads the way with his 7 HRs, triple, two doubles and 8 singles. Moustakas outdoes him with an insane 8 HRs!! Not many charts in the game have that many home runs (8 have that many and one has 9!!). Javy and Matt Williams both sneak in here with 7 OB-making very dangerous card potentials.

Miggy’s 2013 Card DOMINATES. 11 OB with 4 HRs??! SHEEESH. I have to say I really debated what cards images to put up here but settled on that freak of a card and the classic George Brett. As a Yankees fan I’ll always remember him for this. It never gets old. But after Miggy there is a pretty consistent step off as you go further down the list, and a lot of depth at this position. All are great options with a four 11 OBs, and Mike Schmidt making the top 20 with 9 OB (and a WICKED 6 HRs). It’s wild how big of a difference 1 OB can make.

Ok Player 1 here is clearly Miggy BUT HOLY HELL. Anyway moving on, player 2 is the one and only George Brett. Talked about him a bit up there but 10 OB, 2 HR, 2 triples, 3 doubles, a single plus AND 7 singles, this guy is a machine. Coming in at only 370 points (I know the classic set causes points issues but we’re gonna roll with it) this guy provides some UNREAL value. Player 3 is Sal Bando from the classic Athletics chart. To be honest I have zero clue who this dude is. Wikipedia tells me he was actually quite a stud, as he was the As captain in the 70s and the second 3B to hit 200 HRs after Brooks Robinson (where’s his card?!). Anyway he’s a 9 OB with 3 HRs, 2 doubles and 5 singles, and only 2 outs. Player 4 is Dave Magadan from the 2001 PR series at 9 OB he doesn’t really do much as he only has 2 XBH in a HR and 2B, I can kind of see why he’s only valued at 190 points. But if you’re in a pinch and want someone with a 9 OB, and a ton of walks and singles, he’s your guy!!

Looking at the bar graph for second basemen once again MIGGY!! Maybe I should just rename this the Miggy article. Anyway it seems to have a pretty regular distribution, which is what you’d expect from this type of analysis. I think I’d look for value in that group from the 5.83 to 6.62 runs created group as there are some cards you can get for low points and still be near the top of the performance class. I had to include the Schmidt card here somehow-and Magadan. Fun facts on Dave Magadan: he is Lou Piniella’s cousin AND godson, played 16 years in the league, and is current with the Rockies! He somehow got a PR card in 2000 and 2001 BOTH with the Padres?!! Wild. Anyway, hope you enjoyed the 3B article.

  1. Many years ago I was playing my buddy using the 01 set and Magadan hit a pinch-hit walk off 2B in game 7 to win the series. He's always had a special place in my heart since then... glad to see him getting some love!
