2011 Set - Chicago Cubs

On paper, the Cubs should be a bit better than the Pirates, but in reality they finished one game behind Pittsburgh in the NL Central. I think there are more draftable cards here myself, but there are holes too.

Alfonso Soriano is a 6 OB power bat with one of my favorite cutouts in the set. Starlin Castro is a solid all-around shortstop with a nice cutout too. Carlos Pena of Moneyball infamy is a terrific value

for a 9 OB, Speed B card with a homer starting at 18 – all for just 270 points. Kosuke Fukodome is an even more affordable 9 OB at 180 points. Reed Johnson is also an interesting value with an 8 OB card with only one homer, but a single as low as 6, and 5 doubles, for 250 points. Matt Garza’s well rounded card could be a cheapest-of-cheap ace or a good #2 starter. There’s a couple of interesting cards in the bullpen too. It just doesn’t add up to a complete competitive team.

Foils: Aramis Ramirez

And the Pennant Run card:

  1. Fukudome and Peña are great value picks — would definitely be looking to them to add OBP depth to my lineup for cheap!

Real shame Soriano just missed out on an OB 7 card, he would’ve been so much more playable!
